Herb Sendek has accepted an offer to become Arizona State's next basketball coach according to sources in the school's athletic department, who spoke on the condition on anonymity.

Sendek leaves North Carolina State to take the Sun Devil job. He guided the Wolfpack to five straight NCAA Tournament berths, including a Sweet Sixteen showing in 2005, but he has been the subject of controversy in Raleigh, where many fans are unhappy with the job he has done in a highly competitive Atlantic Coast Conference.
Even so, Sendek got a public vote of confidence from North Carolina State athletics director Lee Fowler after the Wolfpack lost to Texas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament two weeks ago.
Apparently, it wasn't enough to keep him from looking elsewhere and indeed, just several days after dicussing the opening with ASU athletic director Lisa Love, a deal was struck between the two parties which will reportedly pay Sendek in excess of $1 million annually.
Various media reports indicate that Sendek's overall financial compensation package at N.C. State was approximately $800,000 per year, and his contract extended through 2010, with a one-year rollover provision.
In his 10-year stint at N.C. State, Sendek is 191-132 overall (.591) and 72-88 in ACC regular-season games. His NCAA Tournament record is 5-5, including 3-2 in the last two seasons.
The 43 year-old arrived at his current position after three seasons as head coach at Miami-Ohio, where he had a record of 63-26. He earned Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1995 and ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2004.
Sendek uses a 2-3 spread offense that puts an emphasis on trying to get players open 3-point looks at the basket in what is essentially a half-court oriented system. The Wolfpack took a league-high 24.2 3-pointers and make a league-best nine per game (.371) last season.
Sendek is a former pupil of current Louisville coach Rick Pitino, one of the biggest names in the college coaching community over the last quarter century. Sendek spent a combined seven years on Pitino's staffs at Providence and later, Kentucky, reaching two Final Fours in the process before he took the job at Miami-Ohio.
