All throughout his Sun Devil career, Robert Nelson was never shy about expressing his gratitude wearing the maroon and gold uniform and his appreciation of the fans’ support. The current Houston Texans defensive back is putting those sentiments into action as he will host a FREE football camp for ages 8-13 at Arizona State on June 24th with several fellow former players serving as instructors in that event.

“We have nearly 200 kids who have signed up,” Nelson said. “We want to use both practice fields so we have room for more. If it’s too hot that day will move it inside (to the Verde Dickey Dome). The main thing for us is to give back to the community and make this free for the kids and bring as many alumni back to campus so they feel comfortable coming back to ASU.

“I want this to be an event we have every year where former players say ‘I can’t wait to come back and reconnect with other players and have fun.’ I just want them to come and have fun teaching the kids.”

Check-in on Saturday on June 24th takes place between 9:00am - 9:45am, and the camp runs between 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at ASU’s football practice fields at the Northwest corner of Rural and 6th street at 511 South Rural Road.

Lunch and beverages will be provided free of charge for the campers only.

Nelson said that several former players are scheduled to be part of this camp serving as instructors.

“Marion Grice, Will Sutton, Alden Darby, Omar Bolden, Gerell Robinson and Jamal Miles are some of the guys coming out,” Nelson detailed, “also some older guys like Terry Richardson…a lot of guys are going to be there and some guys are still contacting me about coming.

“I’m going on my fourth year in the NFL and I wanted to give back to the community that brought me to this place. I also want to donate with some boosters to buy a hyperbaric chamber for the football players and athletes.”

As Nelson put in on his Instagram post: “Everybody of all ages are welcome to eat, meet and greet: that's the ASU way!”
