After leading by as much as 12 points in the second quarter, ASU women’s basketball (12-12, 4-7 Pac-12) trailed off to lose a stunner to Washington (6-14, 1-11 Pac-12) 74-69, a team without a Pac-12 win entering the game.
ASU started strong in the game, shooting 9-17 (52.9 percent) in the first quarter. The Sun Devils led 22-16 at the end of the period.
The second quarter started out with more of the same from the Sun Devils and ASU extended its lead to 12 with 6:52 left in the first half. This is when the game completely changed. The Sun Devils started to struggle offensively and ended up shooting 5-18 (27.8 percent) in the second quarter. The struggles continued into the third quarter as the Sun Devils shot a mediocre 6-16 (37.5 percent). ASU trailed 54-47 at the end of the third.
The Sun Devils fought hard in the fourth quarter, tying the game at 62 with 2:17 to go but Washington kept making shots and free throws and ASU fell by five points.
“We needed to be tougher than we were,” ASU head coach Charli Turner Throne told the Sun Devil Radio Network. “We needed to be tougher than we were. We needed to play better defense, hit screens at the end. Just everything across the board. We’re not playing tough. … I feel bad for this team. I really thought they had figured things out.”
The key players for ASU struggled on Sunday. When ASU has won this season, Jade Loville, Mael Gilles and Taya Hanson have scored well. On Sunday, Loville had 10 points on 5-22 shooting, Gilles had six points on 3-11 shooting and Hanson had five points on 2-9 shooting.
Meanwhile, Washington received great performances from four players in the game. Haley Van Dyke had a game-high 18 points, Lauren Schwartz dropped 17, Nancy Mulkey had 11 and Jayda Noble had 10.
ASU will wrap up its regular season at home next weekend with a Thursday matchup against USC at 5 p.m. MST and a Saturday matchup with UCLA at noon.
