2016 quarterback commit Dillon Sterling-Cole was impressed with what Arizona State had to offer on and off the field, which ultimately led him to today's commitment decision.
"They are the perfect fit for me," Sterling-Cole said. "When I went on my visit, I saw stuff I wasn't expecting to see and that's what made me look more into Arizona State. It was surprising to me to see that they care for you as a student, and not just as an athlete. The facilities, the dorms…everything is right there on campus and in walking distance.
"It's a great school, it has great education and the people there are great. It has everything you need to become a better person and a better player. I know this is a place where I can mature and grow.
Florida, Texas A&M, Mississippi State and Houston were in the signal caller's final list. Sterling-Cole's stepfather, Marques Teel, stated that the family's due diligence did pay off in the recruiting process.
"We started getting offers in January, so we wanted to be patient with the process," Teel recalled. "We feel in the end that Dillon made the right decision for himself. As parents, the first time we had contact with Arizona State is when went for our (unofficial) visit. They rolled out the red carpet for us. I really liked their academics and graduation rates, as parents that is really what we want to see for Dillon off the field. That is important as much as football is.
"The campus itself was a surprise. We never been out that way and it was nice to see the facilities, the living arrangements, and just the whole area of Tempe was nice."
Teel said that while there was quite a bit of research conducted on ASU prior to the visit, that's not to say that they didn't know about the program's accomplishments last year.
"We watch a lot of college football at home," Teel commented. "So we were already familiar and we knew this is a program on the rise. We like that the offense is 50-50 passing and running the ball, and that plays well to Dillon's strengths. He throws well, makes good reads and can really deliver the ball on target.
"It wasn't hard to make the decision to commit to a school out of state. Other schools had their quarterbacks, and I know that Dillon was just as good as they were. They (schools) felt that they had to wait to offer him, so we opened our recruitment from coast to coast to all the schools."
The quarterback said that the pace of the ASU offense is an aspect that appealed to him since it did breed familiarity with the scheme he was running at Houston's Westfield High School.
"They can speed it up or they can slow it down," Sterling-Cole said. "They are very diverse with what they do on offense. At my school we can go shot gun or run it under center.
"Coach Norvell said he likes my arm strength, and my growth as both a person and a player. He really sees me flourish at quarterback at Arizona State University. I hit up Coach Norvell on Sunday and told him I'm committing there. He was very excited and on cloud 9. He said he has been waiting months for this. He kept in touch with me all throughout the process. He kept his word and that is what helped building that relationship going forward."
Sterling-Cole said that he doesn't have an exact date yet for his official visit to Tempe, and did leave the door open to possibly officially visiting other schools later in the year.
"It just depends how things play out after the first two, three games of the season," Sterling-Cole remarked, "just seeing where the team stands. But I'm excited to be committed to Arizona State."
