The Arizona State campus is hardly foreign territory for local Scottsdale Desert Mountain defensive back. Yet, his official visit to the Sun Devils was still an experience where he was able to still learn more about his backyard suitor, who is on the short list of schools he will choose from.
“It was definitely a good experience,” Wilson said of his visit. “I’ve been there probably six or seven times. It was nice up there. I was talking to different recruits from different places, just trying to show them around since it’s my hometown. I was telling them that it’s a really good area to live in and stuff like that.
“I already knew a lot about the program. Coach Dillingham and I already talked a lot about the school and other stuff like that. I was watching film with (Defensive Coordinator) Brian Ward, and he said that he liked me at corner, and that’s where most schools see me. They really like my physicality (the defensive back has a 75-inch wing span), having a high football IQ, and my pedigree. Watching film, I could tell that Coach Ward likes his cornerbacks to be more physical and aggressive, and he said that is what I would bring to the table.”
In his junior year, Wilson posted 49 tackles, four interceptions, and 12 passes defended.
Even though Wilson’s degree of familiarity with the Sun Devils is high, he still enjoyed learning more about the team’s culture from his host player.
“(Running back) George Hart was hanging out with me,” Wilson commented. “He was just telling me how everyone really gets along, and they all have a really close relationship with each other. That was nice to know. It was cool being with him and also two of my teammates, Dillion Hipp and Dylan Tapley, who is already committed to ASU.
“Dylan was talking to me about committing there too. It would for sure be special to play with him in college. I’ve known Dylan for a long time, and playing with him would be something amazing. I don’t really care how far I am from home. It’s more about what type of program the college is, what it’s like to play for them, and where they see me playing.”
Wilson is on track to graduate in December and plans to officially visit Texas and Washington this month. He didn’t rule out additional visits after those trips and didn’t have a timetable for his decision.
The defensive back, son of Arizona Cardinals All-Pro safety and 14-year NFL veteran Adrian Wilson, said that he certainly leans on his father for advice navigating the recruiting process and is thankful to have that resource.
“I talk to him a lot,” Wilson admitted. “If I have any questions, I can go and ask him so I’ll know what I’ll be doing. I see how he responds to my questions so I can correlate. But usually, most of the time, we usually agree on the answers.
“I want to go to a school where I know what the program really holds to myself and trying to evaluate where I fit in at the program. I’m trying to find the right school for myself and then just really getting that feeling of home.”
