Keegan Herring makes pledge to ASU
Peoria (Ariz.) star Keegan Herring, the No. 1 ranked all-purpose back in the West according to Rivals.com, committed to Arizona State Tuesday, according to a report by Greg Biggins of Rivals100.com, after making an unofficial visit to the Tempe campus on Tuesday with his mother.
The 5-foot-9 190-pounder, rated as the No. 6 all purpose back in the nation, rushed for 1,712 yards and 29 touchdowns as a junior and was named regional 5A Player of the Year. Additionally, he ran 10.67 seconds in the 100 meters, which is among the fastest prep times in the state this year.

In a previous interview with ASUDevils.com Herring’s coach at Peoria, Doug Clapp, had the following to say about his star player:
“He’s a complete back. He can catch the ball, he can run he can block. He does it all. He strong, he’s very fast. And he’s great at making you miss sideways. Some people are great straight ahead running backs, he’s not. He [can go] sideways, straight ahead, he can do everything. I mean he’s the real deal.
“The one thing that sticks out with him is just the passion he plays with. There’s different levels. There are some kids that say they like to play the game. He shows you how to play the game. He plays with a passion that is completely different. The kids that I had that went on and played (in college and professionally) before and played really well have had that. It’s just a burning desire to always give their very best. Practice or whatever.”
Arizona State was the first program to offer Herring a written scholarship according to Clapp and Herring himself and the Sun Devils have always held a unique appeal with him as the hometown school and the program he most closely followed.
Herring told ASUDevils.com that his mother wanted him to stay in state and that the allure of playing close to home for a solid Pac-10 program was something that might ultimately prove to be too difficult to pass up.
“It would be a great opportunity and something that would be real exciting,” Herring said at the time, “but I just have to take my time and make sure everything feels right.”
Herring told ASUDevils.com that an initial attempt at the ACT exam fell just short of what he believes he’ll eventually need to score in order to be an initial qualifier. He reported a grade point average of 3.0.
