Josh Doan hasn’t played a game yet for Arizona State, but he has already made history.

With the 37th overall pick of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, the Arizona Coyotes selected forward Josh Doan, marking the highest pick by a player of Arizona State’s Division I hockey program.

Doan, the 19-year-old son of Coyotes legend and current Coyotes’ Chief Hockey Development Shane Doan, was thrilled to find out he will be joining the organization where his father built his own legacy around

“To tie it all together and come back to Arizona is definitely special,” Josh Doan said. “I think no matter where you’re from, it’s going to be an honor to be selected by the team that’s from your city. Being around the rink my whole life as a kid, it just makes it that much sweeter.”

Josh Doan will begin his freshman year at ASU in the fall for the 2021-22 season, wearing the No. 91 on his sweater. It’s the reverse of his dad’s No. 19 - the number that shaped him over his 21-year career in the NHL.

“I’m so proud of him,” Shane Doan said. “Today is a day he’s worked for, and for him to have the opportunity to get drafted to the NHL is something he doesn’t take for granted. For me, it’s surreal; it’s with the Arizona Coyotes.”

Shane was kept in the dark before the Coyotes announced the selection of his son, and that moment was shown with pure excitement across his face.

A native of Scottsdale, Arizona, Josh spent the last two seasons with the Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League, where he registered 36 goals and 48 assists in 98 games, including playing a pivotal role during the Clark Cup Championship run with five points in eight games.

After the Doan family celebrates this milestone day, Josh will turn his focus to when the Sun Devils begin the 2021-22 season on October 2nd against UMass-Lowell.
