Hunter Mayginnes’ ASU pledge driven by sense of family

It goes without saying that the main benefit of committing to your hometown school is having your support system nearby. Whether it was his mother and siblings or his future coaches and teammates, the Chandler Hamilton offensive lineman fully realized the advantage of playing at home held for him which led to his Monday afternoon commitment to the Sun Devils.

“It was a pretty easy decision for me to make,” Mayginnes said, “but for my mom she just wanted me to make the right decision. Now I get to play in front of her and my brother on Saturday nights. I know I have a big influence on him and I want to see him play and my sister play volleyball. So, family was a big part of my decision.

“All the new facilities that Arizona State has are nice but it’s just glamor if you don’t have the right people around you and the right brotherhood. I felt that was very true with Arizona State.”

The lineman said that he actually ready to make his announcement Friday following his unofficial visit last Monday, but decided to wait until today to make his commitment public.

“I thought why not start the week with the big news?” Mayginnes commented.

Following impressive performances at both ASU’s big man competition and Maroon and Gold Camp, the Sun Devils decided to offer the Huskies’ lineman. Mayginnes stated though that even before the offer, he already felt the respect projected by the Sun Devil staff and in turn was impressed by their demeanor.

“Coach Todd Graham is a great man of respect,” Mayginnes remarked in a previous interview. “He’s not all about just making you a good football, but also an honest and trustworthy man. It’s not all about football, but also about you being a good father, a good husband. That really stood out to me.

“Coach Sale (ASU’s offensive line coach) has believed in me ever since he offered me, and I would say he believed in me even before he offered me. I went to two camps and showed him that I’m worthy of an offer and he likes me for who I am on and off the field. He’s a great guy and we have a great relationship.”

Mayginnes said that Sale liked his versatility and potential and that he could play guard or tackle. The linemen’s aggressiveness, quick feet and a high degree of technique were other traits that made an early and strong impression on the Sun Devils.

The lineman is the first local prospect and the first offensive lineman to commit to ASU in their 2018 recruiting class.
