Chase Lucas became the second Chandler Wolf in as many weeks to verbally commit to Arizona State on Monday. Lucas announced his college decision at a ceremony where the 2016 4-star athlete (that Rivals has ranked as the #122 overall player in the country) received his U.S. All-American jersey.

Chase Lucas joins teammate N'Keal Harry, who announced his decision one week prior, as Chandler High players that are following in the footsteps of 2015 QB Bryce Perkins, who is redshirting this season with the hope of competing for the starting job in 2016.
As with Perkins and Harry, Lucas' first offer was from Arizona State, and as he told us back in July, that was a big reason why the Sun Devils have remained at the top of his list for the past two years. "That's the biggest thing I love about ASU, Coach Graham, and Coach Norvell. They believed in me before anyone else did, and pulled the trigger on me before anyone else would. They were talking to me after my first varsity start."
Chase Lucas primarily played a pass-catching running back role during his sophomore and junior seasons at Chandler, helping the Wolves to their first ever defeat of rival Hamilton in his sophomore season, and Chandler's first state championship of the playoff era during his junior season. This year, Lucas had hoped to transition to a slot receiver role, as well as play some defensive back, but he injured his MCL on the opening kickoff of Chandler's second game of the season at Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas. After missing a nearly two months of action, Lucas has returned to action, and has slowly been integrate back into Chandler's offense. Over the last three years combined, Lucas has amassed 3,153 combined rushing/receiving yards, and 33 total touchdowns.
While Lucas feels he has the ability to play defense at the next level, and several schools were courting him as a defensive back, he has previously told us that Mike Norvell envisions his role to be in the slot. Still, Lucas believes he can make the switch if asked, "The transition to defense would be good because my body type and how long and tall I am."
Lucas has previously said part of the appeal of staying home and playing for Arizona State is that he believes the pressure to succeed will be greater than if he had left. "...if I went to ASU, there'd be 10 times more pressure on me than on somebody from out of state. I love that pressure, and I love people counting on me," said Lucas, in an interview with us back in July. "I think about time ticking down, with us on the 20 yard line and the game tied, and people knowing there's going to be a fade route to Chase. I'd love that opportunity. I also think I'd have a better chance to play- not because I'm a better athlete, but because if they're going to push the hometown hero stuff, then we both have the incentive for me to have an opportunity to do well."
Lucas is Arizona State's 14th commit for the 2016 recruiting cycle, third commit from the state of Arizona, and sixth player rated four stars or above by Rivals. The recruiting class currently stands at an average star rating f 3.5 per commit, and with defensive back Byron Murphy (Saguaro) and defensive end Connor Murphy (Brophy) still left as in-state 4-star recruits who are considering ASU, 2016 has the potential to be the Sun Devils' most-talented recruiting class on both a local, and national scale.
