While ASU's focus has been more geared toward California, Arizona and Texas for the 2019 recruiting cycle, there is one prospect Arizona State would like to see if it can lure out to Tempe from the East Coast- 6-0, 175 Williston, Florida DB Quinyon Mitchell.
Mitchell, who is currently committed to Toledo, says that Arizona State defensive backs coach Tony White watched his film, and that led to an offer in early August. The offer led to a visit, which meant Mitchell was able to witness the Sun Devils 16-13 win over Michigan State in person.
"It was a great experience and great atmosphere," said Mitchell. "It was something that I'd never seen before, and I had a great time."
Mitchell said that the performances of N'Keal Harry and Chase Lucas stood out to him the most, and that Lucas' style as a defensive back reminds him of himself.
Mitchell says that his trip to Tempe has given him something to think about regarding his commitment.
"It really changes my recruitment a lot," said Mitchell, who doesn't seem alarmed by the distance from Williston, Florida, which is southwest of Gainesville, to Tempe. "It's far, but I can see myself getting out there."
Mitchell said that his "junior film and his versatility" have gotten him quite a bit of attention, and that University of Florida is one of the most recent schools to start to check in on him.
"I've been the starting corner since I was a sophomore, and I've just been working hard. I started to get offers earlier this spring, and it's just been taking off from there."
Mitchell has had all of his 11 offers come since the spring after his junior season, a year where he had three interceptions, and then during track season, showed off his 10.6 100-meter dash speed.
Mitchell said that he enjoyed spending time with Herm Edwards, as well as listening to current players on the roster talk about their experience with Edwards as the coach.
"I really like Coach Edwards, and the players really expressed to me how much they like the program. They say Coach Edwards is a really cool dude, and that he's always going to be there for you."
Mitchell added, "It's very interesting to me that he works with the defensive backs."
This season at Williston, Mitchell's responsibilities also include getting the majority of the carries on offense. Through two games, he has 314 yards rushing and two touchdowns on just 32 carries. He says he's keeping an open mind about recruiting, but that he's mostly focused on helping his team win.
"I'm taking my recruitment as it comes," said Mitchell. "But I'm really just focused on grinding and having a big season."
