Sterling-Cole ranks among ASUs best QB pledges

ASU received a verbal commitment from Houston Westfield QB Dillon Sterling-Cole today, a 4-star prospect who Rivals ranks as the #7 overall dual-threat QB in the class of 2016.
If Sterling-Cole follows through on his commitment, he'll rank as one of the highest rated quarterback prospects ASU has landed in the era of Rivals and other scouting services- However, the Sun Devils haven't always had the best results from their most celebrated quarterback recruits. Let's use Rivals' evaluations and rankings to take a look at an who Arizona State has gained commitments from over the last 15 years, as well as how they fared after pledging to play in Tempe.
19) Taylor Kelly (2010): Two-star rating. One major conference offer. Redshirted as a freshman and went on to be a three year starter for Arizona State. Threw for 8,819 yards and 79 TDs while rushing for another 13 scores. 26-10 as a starter. 2-1 in bowl games. 2-1 vs U of A.
18) Danny Sullivan (2006): Two-star rating. Two major conference offers. Inherited starting job as a senior, started nine games. Threw for 2,348 yards and 3 TDS while rushing for another 3 scores. 4-5 as a starter. 0-1 vs U of A.
17) Jack Elway (2008): Three-star rating. Two major-conference offers. Redshirted as a freshman. Chose to leave football before redshirt freshman season.
16) Kellen Bradley (2002): Three-star rating. Two major conference offers. Rated the #20 dual-threat QB in the same class that had Vince Young at #1, Marcus Vick at #2, Tyler Palko at #8 and Troy Smith at #12. Redshirted as a freshman. Transferred to Weber State in 2004. Returned to ASU to finish multiple degrees.
15) Max Hall (2004): Three-star rating. Three major conference offers. Rated the #26 overall pro-style QB in the same class that Rudy Carpenter was ranked #20, and Rhett Bomar #1 overall. Redshirted, followed by LDS mission and transfer to BYU. Threw for 11,364 yards and 94 TDs while rushing for another 7 scores. Started 3 games for the Arizona Cardinals in a brief NFL career.
14) Brock Osweiler (2009): Three-star rating. Three major conference offers. Rated the #26 overall pro-style QB in the same class that Bryce Petty was #25, Derek Carr was #29, and Matt Barkley #1 overall. Became full-time starter junior year, and threw for 5,082 yards and 33 TDs while running for another 4 scores. Left ASU early to declare for NFL Draft. Currently plays for Denver Broncos. 8-7 as a starter. 0-1 in bowl games. 1-1 vs U of A.
13) Rudy Carpenter (2004): Three-star rating. Four major conference offers. Rated the #20 overall pro-style QB in the same class that had Max Hall at #26 and Rhett Bomar at #1 overall. Started as a redshirt freshman due to injury, went on to hold starting role for subsequent three seasons. Threw for 10,491 yards and 81 TDs while rushing for 2 more scores. Spent time in the NFL with Tampa Bay and Dallas. 26-17 as a starter. 1-2 in bowl games. 3-1 vs U of A.
12) Samson Szakascy (2007): Three-star rating. Seven major conference offers. Rated the #20 overall pro-style QB in the same class that had Steven Threet at #9, Chasen Stangel at #16, and Jimmy Clausen at #1 overall. Redshirted as a freshman. Started two games as a redshirt sophomore and appeared as a backup the following year. Chose to leave football to pursue music rather than play his senior season. Threw for 414 yards and 4 TDs, and ran for another score. 0-2 as a starter.
11) Chasen Stangel (2007): Three-star rating. Two major conference offers. Rated the #16 overall pro-style QB in the same class that had Steven Threet at #9, Samson Szakacsy at #20 and Jimmy Clausen at #1 overall. Transferred to NAU after first committing to Eastern Kentucky. Threw for 2 TDs in Lumberjack career.
10) Manny Wilkins (2014): Three-star rating. Two major conference offers. Rated the #20 pro-style QB in the same class that had Kyle Allen at #1. Currently a redshirt freshman on the roster.
9) Bryce Perkins (2015): Three-star rating. Four major conference offers. Rated the #20 dual-threat QB in the same class that had Kyler Murray at #5 and Deondre Francois at #1 overall. Currently a freshman on the roster.
8) Mike Bercovici (2011): Three-star rating. One major conference offer. Rated the #14 pro-style QB in the same class that had Cody Kessler at #2 and Jeff Driskel at #1 overall. Redshirted as a sophomore, starter 3 games as a redshirt junior due to injury. Enters 2015 as starting QB. Has thrown for 1,478 yards and 12 TDs. 2-1 as a starter.
7) Michael Affleck (2003): Four-star rating. Five major conference offers. Rated the #13 pro-style QB in the same class that had Sam Keller at #9, JaMarcus Russell at #6, Chris Leak at #2 and Kyle Wright at #1 overall. Transferred to BYU, followed by Dixie State and eventually Utah State.
6) Sam Keller (2003): Four-star rating. Five major conference offers. Rated the #9 pro-style QB in the same class that had Michael Affleck #13, JaMarcus Russell at #6, Chris Leak at #2 and Kyle Wright at #1 overall. Started one game as a sophomore and eight as a junior before losing starting job to Rudy Carpenter and transferring to Nebraska. Threw for 3,018 yards and 26 TDs and ran for a score. 4-4 as a starter. 1-0 in bowl games.
*If this list included D1 transfers into ASU, four-star Georgia Tech/Michigan transferSteven Threet would be ranked behind Michael Eubank and ahead of Sam Keller.
5) Michael Eubank (2011): Four-star rating. Six major conference offers. Rated the #8 dual-threat QB in the same class that had Johnny Manziel #14, Brett Hundley #2 and Braxton Miller #1 overall. Redshirted as a freshman. Appeared in a reserve and short yardage role as a redshirt freshman and sophomore, rushing for 7 TDs and passing for 4 more. Transferred to Samford where he threw for 12 TDs and rushed for 5 scores. Will start at Samford as redshirt senior in 2015.
4) Dillon Sterling-Cole (2016): Four-star rating. Eight major-conference offers. Rated the #7 dual-threat QB in a class that has Shea Patterson at #1 overall. If he signs he'll be the third-highest rated four star the Sun Devils have brought in out of high school in the Rivals era.
3) Derek Shaw (2005): Four-star rating. Six major conference offers. Rated the #4 pro-style QB in the same class that had Wilie Tuitama at #5 and Mark Sanchez at #1 overall. Left ASU in 2006. Walked on at Texas Tech before leaving later in 2006.
2) Brady White (2015): Four-star rating. 13 major conference offers. Rated the #2 pro-style QB in the same class that had Josh Rosen at #1. Currently an early-entry freshman on the roster who participated in 2015 spring practice.
1) Andy Goodenough (2002): Five-star JuCo transfer. Rated the #1 JuCo QB and #9 overall JuCo player in his class. After a medical redshirt at ASU, transferred to Southeast Missouri State where he played in spot duty as a junior, started as a senior, and threw for 3,726 yards and 19 TDs.
