Arizona State's season came to a disappointing conclusion in the Houston Regional hosted by Rice over the weekend. The Sun Devils went 1-2 in the Regional, losing a closely contested opening round game to Baylor, then avoided elimination with a pummeling of Prairie View A&M, before coming back on Sunday to lose yet again to the Bears.

The Sun Devils' post-season hopes took a big initial blow when they lost their opener to Baylor in a close 3-2 game on Saturday, which forced them into the Loser's bracket.
It was a game that started on Friday with Tony Barnette on the mound before rain came, washing out the evening. When the game resumed in the top half of the second inning a day later, Barnette had been replaced by Josh Satow, and Ryan LaMotta had taken over for Cory VanAllen on the mound for the Bears.
Baylor quickly put two runs on the board against Satow in the third inning on a Zach Dillon two-RBI double and it extended its lead to 3-0 in the following stanza when Matt Sodolak brought home a run with a double of his own.
It was a lead the Sun Devils would not overcome. Though they answered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the fourth inning on a Brett Wallace homer down the right field line, it was their only earned run of the game.
ASU attempted a ninth inning rally, but managed to add just one unearned run against LaMotta, who went eight innings, giving up eight hits and one walk, while striking out eight. He improved to 7-6 on the season, while Satow's record dropped to 4-2.
In the Loser's bracket later in the day Saturday, the Sun Devils played Prairie View A&M, a team that had lost its opener to Rice and managed to generate some positive momentum with a 13-4 dismantling of the Panthers.
Sun Devil batters totaled 16 hits and 11 RBI and took advantage of four Prairie View errors in the victory. Ryan Sontag, C.J. Retherford and Preston Paramore had three hits apiece in the game and Colin Curtis had two doubles and three RBI.
ASU scored five runs in second and third innings to take a 10-0 lead and never looked back. Tony Barnette took the mound as the Sun Devil starter for the second day in a row and he pitched two scoreless innings before giving way to Brady Martinez, who lasted four innings, giving up three runs (one earned) on five hits. Martinez improved his unblemished record to 4-0. Retherford pitched the final three innings, picking up his first save of the season.
With a chance to exact a measure of revenge on Baylor Sunday following the Bears' loss to Rice in the Winner's Bracket, the Sun Devils were unable to take advantage of scoring opportunities, and suffered a season-ending 7-2 defeat.
The Bears out-hit the Sun Devils by a narrow 10-9 margin, but ASU had five batters reach via base on balls, compared to just one walk allowed by a quartet of Sun Devil pitchers. In the end, the Sun Devils' loss could be attributed to leaving 12 men on base, while the Bears only left three runners on.
Starter Jeff Urlab (5-3) gave up four runs on four hits in two and two-thirds innings of work for the Sun Devils, and the Bears bounced back to take a 4-2 lead after ASU struck first, with two runs in the top of the second inning. Both runs came via bases loaded walks.
It would be the only runs ASU would score in the contest, and the Sun Devils' season came to and end, having lost two Baylor twice in two games over a two-day period. ASU finished the season 37-21, and their 14-10 mark in Pac-10 play was good enough for second place.
