Zinicola, a strong-armed right-hander who helped the Sun Devils avoid a sweep, allowed just two runs on six hits and one walk over seven innings.
Freshman closer Pat Bresnehan pitched the final two innings and was a bit shaky, giving up six hits and two runs, though with a six run cushion by the time Bresnehan took the mound the Sun Devils had a commanding advantage.
It was a welcome site for Arizona State fans after seeing their team give up a combined 28 runs in the previous two games of the series.
Joel Bocchi and Josh Asanovich each had three RBI on for the Sun Devils. Bocchi got his in an economical fashion with a double, a sacrifice fly and a ground out each generating one run while Asanovich produced his all at once with a powerful three-run home run over the left field wall in the five-run fifth. It was the first of his career.
Colin Curtis had three hits including two doubles for Arizona State and Dustin Pedroia managed a base hit to extend his hitting streak to seven games. With the hit (his 248th), Pedroia moved past Barry Bonds and into 10th all-time at Arizona State.
The Sun Devils struck early, getting to Cal starter Kyle Crist for six runs on four hits in two and two thirds innings. Crist (204) was saddled with his fourth loss on the short season.
Arizona State hosts Washington next weekend for a three-game series beginning with a Friday night (7:00 p.m. locally) contest at Packard Stadium.
