Former ASU WR Gary Chambers, who was helping out at Millennium High with strength and conditioning, took 2019 DL Anthonie Cooper around at an early June 7 on 7, introducing him as someone who was "going to be special." Chambers mentioned that Cooper was receiving increasing recruiting interest, and that he had hoped ASU would take notice.
Three months later, Chambers seems to have gotten his wish, as Cooper announced an offer from ASU via Twitter.

Cooper, a 6-2, 270-pound defensive lineman, has had a giant start to his senior season- amassing 5.5 sacks, 7 tackles for a loss, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal in just two games. He talked with DevilsDigest.com about his offer from ASU
Devils Digest: How much was Arizona State in contact with you before you came out to do an unofficial visit during the UTSA game?
Anthonie Cooper: They weren't heavily in contact. They messaged me here and there, but toward the UTSA game Coach Yantis and Coach Nua really started to pick up the direct messaging, and then they gave me a call. Throughout the summer I showed up to a lot of the camps, so I think they knew me from there.
DD: What do you think they like about your game and how you play?
AC: Coach Nua said he really like my motor. They like how physical I am, and how I get after it on the field.
DD: What was your impression of the game and the stadium?
AC: It was crazy. The fans were so in tune with the game. They were loud and screaming, I just loved the atmosphere. Going into the locker room afterward and seeing the player celebrating and dancing and having a good time, I just loved that.
DD: Is that the kind of college atmosphere you're looking to be part of? One that's business on the field, but he players have fun with each other off it?
AC: Yeah. When there's business that needs to get done, it needs to get done. But off the field, we're brothers. We know how to have a good time.
DD: What did you enjoy about observing the 3-3-5 defense?
AC: What I liked about the fronts they played is that they're always moving. They don't really take up any one-on-one assignments, they're always slanting one way or stunting. They keep the offensive linemen off you so that you're able to make plays.
DD: How long have you been on varsity at Millennium?
AC: Since my sophomore year.
DD: So what has made the difference for you to start to make such a large impact this year?
AC: I've always had the same mindset and work ethic I came into high school with, and this is no disrespect to my previous coaches, but I feel like the coaches I have now have helped me, and put my name out there, and just made sure I'm prepared for stuff like this.
DD: Millennium is 2-0 right now, what are your expectations for this season?
AC: I think our goal is just to realize as a team that we can play at a high level, and that we are going to make it somewhere. At the lowest, we're expecting a 7-3 record, and that's at the very lowest. After that, we're expecting to see the second round of the playoffs, and then start talking championship-type stuff.
DD: How does the Arizona State offer affect your overall recruiting? Do you think it will help kick off your recruiting?
AC: Yeah, this offer is really going to put me out there. Coaches could see this and say, "oh, ASU offered, what do they see in this kid?" It could really affect my recruitment.
DD: Is Arizona State somewhere where you could see yourself suiting up?
AC: I love everything about that school. The facility is beautiful, and the connection was there with Coach Nua. I just like it there.
