Committing to a school sight unseen has certainly been the rule and not the exception not only in the 2021 class but also in many cases in the 2022 class as well. ASU was the first to offer Greenwood, S.C. defensive lineman, Robby Harrison back in July of 2020, and he, in turn, rewarded the Sun Devils with a pledge last September. The Territorial Cup game offered Harrison an opportunity to finally check out in person his college destination and suffice to say that his Tempe trip didn't disappoint.

“The first minute I pulled up there, I knew that this was the place for me,” Harrison said. “I knew I made the right choice. I could tell that it was a strong family environment with the players in the coach, and I could tell that everybody really loves everybody else. There are not just different clusters that talk to each other. They all love each other.

“(defensive lineman) Joe Moore hosted me on the visit and told me that everything you need is right there. He talked about the family environment, and you could tell how much he and the players loved the position coaches. All the players were excited that coach Herm was going to still be there next year.”

And speaking of player-coach relationships, Harrison said that interacting with defensive line coach Robert Rodriguez in person was really no different than the numerous Zoom calls they had for over a year now.

“He was the same guy with the same energy he had on Zoom,” Harrison commented. “He’s a wonderful coach and guy to be around. I learned a lot from him, and I know he can help me get to that next level. He said that with my size and athleticism, I could play either the nose or the 3-technique (defensive tackle). He just loves the way I play.

“I liked watching the defense play (against Arizona). It’s a wonderful defense. Hey are very active, and they set each other up for success. It’s not just one person trying to get all the plays. Everybody gets a piece of the pie.”

What made the visit truly complete for the defensive lineman commit was the impact the non-football aspects of the school made on him as well.

“Tempe is different, and living there would be a whole new adventure,” Harrison remarked. Tempe is just a wonderful place, and it kind of reminded me of my hometown of Greenwood. It’s not that big, and everything is close to each other. So it really felt like home, and I knew this was the spot.

“I want to major in criminal justice, and Arizona State is one of the top schools in the country. The classes (for criminal justice) are right there around the corner from the football facility. So I know I get there after practice with no problem. Everything I saw on my visit didn’t surprise me because I expected it to be a wonderful place.”
