Mhiesen back in ASUs Recruiting Sights

Whether it is his football career or recruiting process, it has been anything but a smooth path for Deya Mhiesen. Nonetheless, the long and windy route for this offensive lineman is now poised to have a successful destination. Devils Digest talked to the Arizona Western College prospect who attended Arizona State's practice last Saturday.
The 6-7 305 lbs. Deya Mhiesen prepped at Washington High School in Philadelphia and due to academics had to begin his next stage of his career at the junior college level.

"I went to ASA college in Brooklyn and played there one year," Mhiesen said. "I had to leave there because of grades and I went to Pierce College (Calif.). I got a bunch of offers in the spring there, so I showed everyone what I had. I redshirted there so I would have an extra year to play in a (Division I) program. It was very expensive to live there and It was hard working, going to school and going to practice. I was even homeless for a couple of weeks. So I had to leave.
"Now I'm at Arizona Western which is great. They pay for your housing and it's in the middle of nowhere where you have no distractions and all you do is focus on your school and football. That's the most important thing. I got here in January and I love it, and I'm going to play here this year."
Arizona State was seriously considering adding the linemen to their 2015 class, but his academics prevented that. This is the same reason why he never played for Oklahoma State, a school he committed to last year.
The ASU coaching staff has been in constant contact with Mhiesen and if he does graduate with his AA in December he will join the Sun Devils as mid-year transfer in the 2016 class.
"ASU is the only school recruiting me now," Mhiesen said, "and Coach Thomsen and Coach Long will be there in the spring to watch me. Coach Thomsen really likes my athleticism and pass blocking as an offensive tackle. He said that my weight is good, but I know I need to get more muscle on me. I know I can be a better run blocker and I'm going to use spring ball to get better.
"I talked to Coach Graham when I went down there (last Saturday). He told me that he is very excited to have me and can't wait to see me up there. He's a good guy. I trust in him and believe him. I like their spread offense and how they are 50-50 in pass and run and that is what you do in the NFL.
"I really like how ASU is such a diverse school. I like the environment there. I'm in touch with a lot of the players like Chris Chambers and Vi Teofilo, and they have a lot of positives to say about ASU."
The plan for Mhiesen, who will be a two for two player in terms of eligibility, is to sign his grant-aid paperwork with ASU once he receives his AA degree in December. He is expecting his recruiting interest to pick up in the weeks and months to come, and he has left the door open to entertain other possibilities.
"You always have to keep all your options open," Mhiesen admitted. "You never know what will happen. But I'm leaning towards ASU and that is the school I'm most comfortable with. That's where I want to be right now."
