Hayes talks ASU pledge

Arizona State landed a commitment from Scranton (Penn.) Lackawanna Community College running back De'Chavon Hayes Friday.

Hayes, 5-foot-11, 190 pounds, picked the Sun Devils over Oklahoma. Kansas, Purdue, South Florida, USC and Virginia had also reportedly offered scholarships.

"I just felt most comfortable with ASU," Hayes said. "When I visited there I felt it was a special place and exactly what I was looking for.

"The offense is perfect for me and the situation is great. I feel like I can come in and make an immediate impact and return kicks and punts and just be part of a very explosive offense."

Hayes, who goes by the nickname "Gump" because he's been told he runs as fast as the movie character Forest Gump, is the No. 61 rated junior college prospect nationally.

"I think this is one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life," Hayes said. "I don't know how to describe it but I just feel like everything about it is the perfect fit for me."

Hayes is a May graduate who will have three years to play two seasons at ASU. He said the schools' coaches received his news very excitedly.

"They said everyone was jumping around the room and they were really hyped," Hayes said. "They seemed pretty excited about it, said it was really big news."
