Sources: ASU expected to name Porter RB coach

Arizona State coach Todd Graham is preparing to announce the addition of former Memphis coach and two time Rivals.com National Recruiter of the Year Larry Porter to his staff this week, ASUDevils.com has learned.

Porter, 40, will coach running backs for the Sun Devils according to multiple program sources.

In two seasons at Memphis, where he played running back from 1990-93, Porter went 3-21 in his first head coaching job before being fired following the conclusion of the 2011 campaign.

Prior to his time at Memphis, Porter coached running backs under Les Miles for eight years, the last five of which came at LSU, where he was named Rivals.com Nataional Recruiter of the Year in 2007 and 2009.

Recruiting primarily Louisiana and Texas, Porter was responsible for the additions of four Rivals100 prospects in 2007, including Top-20 recruits Chad Jones and Terrance Toliver, both five stars signees. Porter also secured the additions of four other Rivals250 prospects in the class.

In 2009, Porter again landed two Top-20 national prospects, five star recruits Russell Shepard and Craig Loston, in addition to two other four star prospects.

While in Baton Rouge, Porter coached five LSU backfield players who were selected in the NFL Draft, including first round pick Joseph Addai.

Before coaching at LSU, Porter coached running backs under Miles for three seasons at Oklahoma State, where he had three straight 1,000 yard rushers, including future second-round NFL pick Tatum Bell.

Graham attempted to hire Porter to his ASU staff initially in December, but it appeared Porter was likely to re-join the staff at LSU, where he coached for five years under Les Miles before taking the Memphis head job.

ASU instead hired former Division II Abeline Christian head coach Chris Thomsen to coach running backs, but Thomsen left the post after less than a month on the job to take more money to coach offensive linemen at Texas Tech.

Porter was again asked if he had interest in the job by Graham, and this time he accepted, bypassing several other high profile offers according to one source.

On Wednesday, Porter was already at ASU in meetings with the offensive staff and his position group, a source said. His hire is expected to be announced by the school soon pending clearance from human resources.

The running backs position at ASU appears to be well stocked with talent for Porter to work with, with senior Cameron Marshall a likely NFL Draft pick in 2013 if he's able to remain healthy and productive.

ASU also landed the nation's No. 1 junior college running back, 6-foot-0, 215 pound Marion Grice out of Blinn CC in Texas, and Rivals100 recruit D.J. Foster, out of Scottsdale Saguaro High.
