June 24, 2013Arizona State started a major marketing campaign around the Valley Monday featuring, according to one source, nearly 20 prominently located billboards, including one in Tucson.
The centerpiece of the campaign is ASU sophomore running back D.J. Foster, a former local prep standout at Scottsdale Saguaro High, whose likeness is on approximately a dozen billboards along with the hashtag #staytrue2ASU.
Fellow sophomore Jaxon Hood, a defensive tackle out of Chandler Hamilton High, is also included in the campaign, which is designed to inspire prominent local recruits to consider the value of remaining local and playing for the Sun Devils.
Foster and Hood earned freshman All-American honors by at least one publication.
The campaign also features several former NFL players with Arizona roots who starred at ASU, including Todd Heap, Zach Miller and Adam Archuleta. Those billboards display the slogan, "Sun Devil Football: Where Arizona stars become legends."
Half of the billboards are digital and the other half are static, according to a source, with many located along major freeways, including one at I-17 and Dunlap, on Loop-202 between I-10 and Loop-101. There's also one on 7th street north of McDowell.
ASU coach Todd Graham and his staff have emphasized their desire to improve the program's success at landing star in-state players and this campaign is a clear ratcheting up of those efforts.
The 2014 class in Arizona is arguably the best in state history. ASU has yet to receive a commitment from any of the state's top prospects in the cycle, but is strongly in contention for no fewer than half of the Top-15 prospects in the class.
