In the Mix
Jacksonville (FL) Bolles offensive linemen Brent Benedict is one of the country's most athletic line prospects, holding an impressive offer list. The Sunshine State product hopes to trim his list this summer, and South Carolina is one team that hopes to make the cut.
The latest school to jump in the mix for the talented trenchman is Oregon.
"I got the letter in the mail last week," he said. "I was very excited because being from Florida, it's very unusual to get an offer from the West Coast like that."
The Ducks are not the only school out west that Benedict is interested in thus far.
"At the beginning of June I'm going out to California to visit UCLA and Southern Cal just to see what it's all about."
A few other schools received visits from Benedict over his spring break.
"I visited Georgia, Duke, Wake Forest, and Clemson over spring break," he said. "I've also been up to Florida for some basketball games."
When asked about South Carolina, the the 6-foot-5 line prospect had this to say:
"I'm originally from Greenville so that is kind of like home for me. I have a cousin that is a senior at South Carolina and I really like Columbia. I've heard great things from them and I really like the campus. I hope to get up there this summer."
Head Coach Steve Spurrier and his son Steve, Jr., the recruiter of record for Benedict, have made a positive impression.
"I've spoken with them and I really like them, they seem like great guys," he said.
There is no leader at this point for the highly sought-after talent.
"I thought that going into these visits I would have a clear-cut leader that stood out," he told GamecockCentral.com. "Each school has it's own unique characteristics as far as academic programs and facilities."
Benedict talked to GamecockCentral.com about what would be important to him in the process.
"I've sat down with my parents and made a checklist of things," he said. "We talked about academics, facilities, and the overall feel of being on campus since I'll be spending four to five years there."
Benedict hopes his list will be narrowed in the coming months.
"I'll have it narrowed down between three and five schools going into my senior season," he said. "Until then, I just want to look at schools."
Benedict is ranked #40 on the Rivals 100 and as the 5th best offensive tackle in the nation.
